City of Madras
Police Department
General Overview:
The purpose of the Police Reserve Program is to utilize Officers
on a part time basis to augment the full time police force.
Those that are carefully selected for this program are trained
throughout a series of five levels of advancement with the
fifth level being the equivalent of a full time police officer.
Our Reserve Officers are trained on a continuous basis and
by the time they reach the 4th and 5th step levels, they have
had extensive hands on training and have completed a mandatory
Reserve Officer Academy covering 362.5 hours of classroom
instruction and practical application. This is equivalent
to the full time officers police academy in Monmouth.
The Officers are under constant supervision of a full time
police officer up through step level 3. They begin solo patrolling
at step level 4 and can cover shifts for full time officers
at step level 5.
The Madras Police Department currently holds 6 Reserve
Officer positions with one Reserve Sergeant and one Reserve
Corporal. The positions are volunteer, but a minimum number
of hours patrol time must be volunteered each month
to keep them current in addition to mandatory training.
Additional hours are expected for the supervisory positions.
Our Reserve Officers are dedicated team players who volunteer
their time and energy month after month to make Madras a safer
place for everyone in this community. The time given goes
beyond the hours put in on the streets. There is an
enormous amount of paperwork that goes into each and every
shift they work. In addition, these officers spend their
time in our court rooms in front of judge and jury to do their
part in ensuring lawful offenders are dealt with accordingly.
We expect a lot from our Reserve Officers and demand superior
professional performance from them. We give them the
tools they need to achieve this level of performance and the
outcome is an outstanding reserve force working for the citizens
of Madras.
