City Tree Program
In 1996, the City of Madras, in conjunction with the Urban Forestry Commission, developed a tree-planting program entitled, “NeighborWoods” to increase the number of trees planted and cared for along public right-of-ways. The program allowed citizens in various neighborhoods of Madras to plant and care for trees in their respective neighborhoods or designated areas. The NeighborWoods program provided citizens an opportunity to feel a greater sense of community.
The NeighborWoods program grew from a need to increase the number of trees in Madras, to a program that would improve the quality of neighborhoods. The program brings the citizens of Madras together in a partnership with the City, planting and caring for their respective trees. The program also helps develop stronger neighborhood cohesiveness that translates into better neighborhood communication and identity. While caring for and learning about these trees, the neighborhood participants develop a stronger sense of purpose and community that translates into a host of benefits or the community as a whole.
The City of Madras along with the Urban Forestry Commission (UFC) or its designated representative will review each proposed site based on the size of the lot, soil type, overhead utilities, and the overall neighborhood character. The NeighborWoods participants can request one tree from the approved species list, but the final decision will lay with the City of Madras and the UFC. The City of Madras will provide a reimbursement of up to $150.00 for one tree, while the responsibility for planting and watering will remain with the Neighborwoods participants.
The success of the NeighborWoods program is dependent on the participation of the residents of the neighborhoods of Madras, and other participating organizations in Madras. We will coordinate with residents, neighborhood groups, schools, churches, and businesses. For more information or to being the NeighborWoods program in your area, call 541-410-7125, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
All in all, there will be a variety of benefits to the City of Madras and its residents by participating in the NeighborWoods program.
